Last updated: 13-Apr-2026

NOTE: The site was changed on Monday, July 27th due to hazardous smoke conditions near Eagle Lake and Susanville, CA. The rest of this Website still refers to the Eagle Lake campsite — and probably won't be updated. If you're still reading this, you can Cowboy/Cowgirl Up and deal with the last-minute site change. The BOSS, sub-Bosses, and minions are still on board. Meals, etc. should remain as planned...

Site:

Nestled high in the Cascade Mountains among towering firs and pines, the Hyatt Lake Recreation Area is located in the northern corner of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument on the shores of beautiful Hyatt Lake. At just above 5,000 feet of elevation, the 745-acre Hyatt Lake Recreation Area provides options for summertime camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, biking, fishing, swimming, boating, and many other recreation opportunities. The recreation area offers dramatic views of Mt. McLoughlin.

Hyatt Lake is a 10 mph "no-wake" lake. During spring and summer months, Hyatt offers excellent lake trout and small mouth bass fishing. Other recreation activities are available including hiking, swimming, horseshoes and a sand volleyball court. Access points for the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail are easily accessible starting from the campground. Although the campground is closed during winter months, great winter activities are available such as cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing.

Facilities:

The amenities are not quite what we have enjoyed at Crescent Lake or Dworshak. Each of the two camps has a bathroom with men-women sides, two flush toilets/urinal and a sink in each. There are water taps located as various places through the sites. No electricity at the sites except for the bathrooms. There is a pay phone at the site. No showers or covered area. The sites are well shaded, and have direct lake access.

There are four showers at the marina, 3/4 mile by paved trail, 1 mile by road. They are available from 7am to 9pm. Tokens are available from the marina 7am to 7pm, cost is $2. The marina also has boat rentals. There is a store at the marina with ice available. Gallatin Beach is just east of the marina.

The marina says that most cell phones work in the area, with the caveat that it depends on exactly where you are. Verizon is the worst, often working only when out on the lake. ATT/Cingular are known to work, at least at the marina, and a check of the coverage map shows T-Mobile should work too.

We also have a list of nearby motels, if you'd rather credit-card camp...
